For the lecture, slated for Jamaica Conference Centre in Downtown, Kingston on Thursday, October 10, 2019 starting at 4:00 pm, architect and urban planner Pedro Ortiz will present on ‘The Cost of Chaos: Envisioning a Resilient Metropolis’.

President of the JIA, Stacey-Ann Dennison-Heron, said the “JIA values these opportunities, which provide its members with the ability to maintain, enhance and/or increase the knowledge and continuing ability of architects.”

With the JIA week theme of “Architecture for All”, the lecture offers a unique opportunity for diverse audiences to experience the value of urban planning and architecture.

The three CPD points, gained by the architects, are an indication of advancement, progression and increased proficiency within the profession.

Dennison-Heron said the JIA supports the vision of PanJam Investment Limited and its other partners with University of Technology Jamaica Caribbean School of Architecture, the Urban Development Corporation, the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and the Kingston Restoration Company to host the Lecture.

“The JIA supports the PanJam [Investment Limited] mission, particularly the commitment in participating in national development and life-long learning. As the urban spaces in Jamaica develop and densify, the improvement in the quality of our spaces becomes paramount in planning for the future. We look forward to Ortiz’s presentation,” shared Dennison-Heron.

Ortiz has a special interest in Jamaica, namely the capital Kingston and has much expertise on the topic as a trained architect with over 30 years of experience. He has also served as a consultant to multi-national organisations such as the World Bank and the European Union.

The free lecture also aims to recognise the career of the late Honourable Maurice Facey and his passion for the city Kingston. The first of a series and seeks to start a discussion around the urban development of Kingston to provoke action that can be replicated across the island.

“The vision of Maurice Facey to develop several landmarks across Kingston [ScotiaBank and Air Jamaica Building Downtown, the PanJam Building in New Kingston], at a time of political and economic uncertainty is unprecedented. We want to also recognise his vision for a resilient downtown with the creation of the Kingston Restoration Company over 30 years ago,” said Stephen Facey, chairman and CEO of PanJam Investment Limited.
