Bartlet pleased but calls for aggressive marketing strategy

Opposition Spokesman for Tourism and Travel Service Development, Ed Bartlett, says that whilst stop over visitor arrivals growth was flat, he is pleased with the 19.9 percent overall growth in visitor arrivals and the 4.5 percent growth in earnings for the winter tourist season which ended April 15.
Mr. Bartlett says that it is now necessary that Tourism Minister, Dr. Wykeham McNeill outline a clear and aggressive marketing strategy for the coming summer season. He said the continued growth in the tourism sector must not be allowed to falter especially given the fact that ‘Jamaica 50th’ celebrations should be a bonanza and a remarkable opportunity to drive increased Jamaica Diaspora traffic.
Mr. Bartlett also said that Dr. McNeill should make public the projected stop over arrivals figure for this year and indicate the broader marketing strategy to drive stop over arrivals for the rest of the year. Mr. Bartlett noted that he is becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of marketing activity especially in a difficult and competitive world economy.
Mr. Bartlett also noted that upon doubling the Tourism Enhancement Fund fees (TEF) while in office late last year, he gave the assurance that half of the money collected will be ring fenced solely for marketing and airlift support. This he said will give the Government far more money to drive an aggressive and effective marketing campaign that will redound to increased tourist traffic and a subsequently stronger Jamaican economy.
